Fuck yeah brother. I just moved into a new place and there's a trail head right up the street! I'm in heaven. I ride a 2007 specialized XC fsr (4"/100mm dual suspension). Its getting old, but still taking a beating. I've taken it up to north star(a ski resort) for some downhill as well, that was so epic. Then the Tahoe rim train the next day. Fucking awesome. One of the best trips a buddy and I ever took.

What do you ride?
Those are some nice bikes...I have a Diamondback Mountain/beach cruiser type bike, no suspension or anything but looking into a bike like your guys, but need to get my little girl hers first...she just keeps growing out of everything lol...daddy's little girl! I used to race BMX when I was young, rode for a couple of bike shops, had Mongoose, Redline, Diamondbacks, and one other I always forget the name of, but was cool and loved racing seasons...but always wanted to hit Tahoe for an excursion when I get a good bike for it...will look on craigslist or something...for my size what size frame and wheels should I be looking at...been a while looking for a bike you know?

That's a 29er(meaning 29" wheel as opposed to the standard 26" ) and this years model.
I'd look into a 2008-2010 year fsr dual suspension version (if your doing more than casual trail riding, if not a hardtail is all you'll need), that wasn't beat to hell. Should be much less than that. Hell I bought mine (the 2007 XC fsr, which is the model under the stump jumper) for 1500 new. And I've put her through hell and back. Still holding up great.
